INTERNATIONAL FRENCH SCHOOL MATERNALLE
AN INNOVATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SHAPED THROUGH USER ENGAGEMENT
Super Assembly was engaged to design the new Kindergarten learning environment at the International French School, reimagining how space could support contemporary pedagogical models centred on autonomy, collaboration, and multilingual learning. Working within an already partially completed building, the project focused on aligning the physical environment with the school’s evolving educational vision through close engagement with teachers, leadership, and students. The resulting “Villa” concept clusters classrooms around a shared central learning commons, enabling co-teaching, flexible group learning, and greater interaction across classes.
Through a participatory design process involving workshops, observations, and prototyping, the project developed a series of modular and multi-functional spatial elements that allow classrooms to expand, contract, and reconfigure throughout the day. Carefully considered material palettes, integrated storage, acoustic elements, and adaptable furniture systems were introduced to create calmer, more legible environments while supporting the dynamic rhythms of early childhood education. The completed spaces demonstrate how design, when treated as a collaborative and iterative process, can become a catalyst for new teaching practices and more engaged learning experiences.
